"Largo - With Expression (St. Croix River in Winter)"
28 x 48" oil on linen, 2017
The St. Croix River, bordering Minnesota and Wisconsin, is captivating in its endless moods and changing seasons. Here, in this painting, we move slowly within the long, large shapes, echoing the solemnity and peace of the winter’s slumber. Though some may see and feel only the darkness and foreboding of the lingering season, I witness and testify to the co-existing metaphor of beauty and hope

I have painted several sunrises from this pristine Kauai cliff. This studio piece, created from those sketches and my memory, allowed me to further explore the soulful music that washes over me when I witness such scenes.
Linking land with sea, the eternal rhythm of the waves against the shoreline is both calming and transformative. The uplifting, expansive sky directs us towards that which is greater than ourselves is echoed in the various shoreline peaks, which stretch like large dark fingers into the center of the composition.
Like the same chord in a different octave, the sea reflects the sky above, but adds a unique arrangement of darker values to heighten its individuality.
This painting has been selected for the 2021 American Society of Marine Art's North Juried Regional Exhibition at Krasl Art Center. The show opens on October 9th and runs through November 28th. To learn more, click HERE.
